Worland and Ten Sleep Wyoming, located near the Big Horn Mountains, are natural stop off points whether your heading to Yellowstone National Park or the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The Worland / Ten Sleep Area of Wyoming

Summer at Cloud Peak - 13,125 ft. - located in the Cloud Peak Wilderness of the Big Horn Mountains in WyomingThe Worland/Ten Sleep Area Chamber of Commerce is located in Worland, Wyo., which is nestled within the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains. It is centrally located in the northern portion of Wyoming, and consists of two towns: Ten Sleep and Worland.

Travelers from the east will embark on the Big Horn Mountains via Cloud Peak Sky (U.S. Hwy. 16) after exiting the I-90 corridor in Buffalo. The Big Horns offer the outdoor enthusiast summer activities including: boating, some of the finest fishing around, hiking, picnicking, photography, fossil hunting, camping and peaceful moments in wilderness areas which allow time to contemplate the splendor and beauty of the region.

This is the same land that was precious to the native American: an area the Sioux, Crow and Blackfoot Indians fought for. The highest point, Cloud Peak (see above photo) is located 13,125 feet above sea level.

In the fall and winters months, the mountain land offers pleasant treks by snow machine or by skis, both cross-country and downhill. Big Horn Ski Area (1-888-BIGHORN) offers fast, easy runs for the downhill athlete. Prime cross-country ski trails are located nearby at Willow Park.

Wildlife is abundant in the Big Horn Mountains just east of Worland and Ten Sleep Wyoming, and hunting for elk, deer, antelope and bear is a way of life.Wildlife abounds in the region and big game hunting is a popular activity for both locals and nonresident sportsman. Elk, antelope, mule deer and upland game birds represent the diversity of habitat of the region and the options for interested outdoorsmen.

Along our travel route the amazing geography changes from mountains to badlands between Ten Sleep and Worland on Highway 16. This area, in fact, had been covered by water during its history. Many fish and amphibious fossils have been uncovered revealing the true diversity of this area.

Introducing Worland, Wyoming and Washakie County's rarest resident, "Powder"

White-Tailed "Albino" Prairie Dog
Photo and information by Jim Yule

FACT: Albinoism in mammals occurs in less than
1 in 100,000 births.

Powder resides somewhere inside Washakie County, but out of fear of him being shot, his exact location will remain my secret :-)

Believe or not, White-Tailed Prairie Dog populations are dramatically declining and some day may be protected.

To view a video of the prairie dogs at play you will need to download a free version of "Real One" player.
